Overview of Asia’s Automobile Sales, Production and Exports in 2022

Automobile sales in Asia increased 16.6% year-on-year to 10,640,556 units in 2022 (total of 13 countries in South Asia, ASEAN and East Asia, excluding China and Japan). In 2021, social restrictions were imposed due to the reemergence of the corona pandemic, and the shortage of parts, mainly semiconductors, hampered automobile production. In contrast, there were no social restrictions and semiconductor shortages eased in 2022, allowing India, Malaysia and Vietnam to reach record highs. On the other hand, South Korea and Taiwan, where the impact of semiconductor shortages has been lingering, sales fell below the previous year for the second consecutive year. However, overall sales exceeded 10 million units for the first time in four years since 2018, reaching an historic high.
