In 2021, sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) increased significantly in China. The number of NEVs owned went up from 4.92 million units at the end of 2020 to 7.84 million units at the end of 2021. Simultaneously, the expansion of China’s battery charging and swapping infrastructure is also proceeding at a rapid pace.

According to the China Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance, the number of battery chargers in China increased 55.7% in 2021 from the previous year to 2.61 million units. The number of household chargers rose 68.3% to 1.47 million units, while the number of public chargers went up 42.1% to 1.14 million units. It has been calculated that there is one charger for about three NEVs available in China. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers estimates that NEV sales will reach 5 million units in 2022, so it will be necessary to accelerate infrastructure development in China in preparation for the rapid increase in NEV ownership.
