India’s Automobile Sales by State in 2020: Demand Dropped Over 20% in All Regions

India’s automobile industry association SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) divides the country into four main regions for statistical purposes. In 2020, due to the spread of coronavirus infection, automobile sales in all four regions, North, South, East and West, decreased over 20% from the previous year, indicating that the pandemic equally affected the entire country.

Looking at the sales composition of all four regions, the west accounted for 31% of all sales followed by the north with 29%, south with 27% and east with 14%. Change compared to the previous year was insignificant, less than 1 percentage point. All states and union territories of India saw a drop in sales in 2020. India’s largest automobile market Maharashtra state declined 23.5% to 314,000 units. Maharashtra state was followed by Uttar Pradesh state with 276,000 units, down 23%, and Gujarat state with 248,000 units, down 21.2%.
