Japan’s 2021 Automobile Sales by Powertrain Type and Engine Displacement

In Japan, gasoline vehicle sales accounted for 67.3% of all passenger vehicle sales, down 4.2pp (percentage points) from the previous year, in 2021. HEVs (standard vehicles with an engine above 660cc) made up 28.1% of the market, up 3.8pp, and PHEVs (standard) accounted for 0.6% of all passenger vehicle sales, up 0.2pp, indicating a shift from conventional vehicles to electric models. The market share of diesel vehicles remained the same at 3.9%.
