Indonesia’s Automobile Sales by Segment in 2023

Indonesia’s automobile market in 2023 decreased 4.0% year-on-year to 1,005,802 units. Both passenger and commercial vehicles declined, but the decrease was greater for commercial vehicles. Passenger cars decreased by 0.6%, SUVs dropped by 0.2%, and MPVs, which account for nearly 40% of the market, fell by 1.1%. The proportion of SUVs was 17.4% in 2018 but expanded to 24.4% by 2023.

Passenger cars were down 0.6% to 130,270 units. Of these, the largest B segment declined 3.4% to 71,987 units, the only segment that saw a decrease. SUVs fell 0.2% to 245,481 units. Of these, small SUVs increased 3.1% to 185,149 units, setting a record for the second consecutive year; however, it is not likely that small SUVs will overtake small MPVs, which are the largest segment of the market, anytime soon. MPV sales were down 1.1% to 371,507 units, of which small MPVs dropped 6.2% to 296,587 units.
