OPINION: BYD to Launch Mini BEV in Japan in H2 2026

In April 2025, Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD announced its next move in the Japanese market, with a full-scale entry into the mini vehicle market in the second half of 2026. The model to be introduced is a BEV passenger car. A leaked photo that appears to have been taken in Hong Kong or Macau shows it to be a high-roof wagon similar to the Honda N-Box, Suzuki Spacia, and Daihatsu Tanto, with a rear-seat sliding door. The vehicle appears to be a Japanese kei car powered by BEV technology. It is reported that the design to meet Japanese mini standards has already been completed. Depending on equipment such as cutting-edge ADAS, if launched in Japan, this will be the beginning of new competition for Japanese manufacturers where conventional wisdom will no longer apply.
