Indonesia: Motorcycle Sales Fall 43.6% to 3.66 Million Units in 2020; Honda’s Share Reaching Nearly 80%

Indonesian motorcycle sales (the combined sales of the five members of the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association or AISI) fell 43.6% compared to the previous year to 3.66 million units in 2020. The Indonesian motorcycle market has been trending between 6 million-6.5 million units in recent years, but sales in 2020 were the lowest since 2003 when it was at 2.81 million units. The sharp decline was due to the countermeasures that were implemented to contain COVID-19 and the stricter examination of motorcycle purchase loans.

Despite the significant decline in sales, two long-term trends have continued: the market share of scooters went further up and Honda's market share stayed on the growth track.

The share of scooters in the motorcycle market in 2020 was 87.9%, up slightly from 87.2% in 2019. Unit sales and market share of sports and underbone-type motorcycles continued to decline due to the popularity of scooters.
