Thailand’s Automobile Sales Results in YTD June 2021

Automobile sales in Thailand increased 13.6% in the first six months of 2021 from the same period of the previous year to 373,000 units. During the April-May 2021 period, the number of vehicles sold compared to the same period of the previous year increased double digits due to the impact of the first wave of the new coronavirus infection. However, the pace of market recovery in 2021 slowed due to the re-expansion of the infection, remaining at 70% compared to the first half of 2019 (524,000 units).

Looking at sales in the first six months of 2021 by vehicle type, sales of most vehicle types increased compared to the same period of the previous year. More concretely, SUVs and PPVs (one-ton pickup truck-based SUVs) increased around 50%, driving the recovery of the entire market. As for other mass-market vehicles, one-ton pickup trucks went up 13.1% to 169,000 units, while passenger cars (sedans and hatchbacks) remained nearly at the same level as the same period of the previous year at 0.9%.
