India’s Automobile Sales by State / Union Territory in 2022

This report presents the 2022 sales results of automobiles by region and state / union territory. Using India’s automotive industry association SIAM’s classification scheme, the country is divided into four regions: north, south, east and west. In 36 out of 38 states and union territories, automobile sales increased as vehicle supply disruptions due to semiconductor shortages eased.

Compared to the previous year, sales increased 25.9% to 1.32 million units in the north, 23.8% to 6.15 million units in the east, 29.2% to 15.18 million units in the west and 23.2% to 1.27 million units in the south. Overall, demand went up by over 20% in all regions, surpassing the record high level of 2018.

Out of the 34 states and union territories which are covered by this report, 31 of them saw a double-digit increase in sales. India’s largest market was Maharashtra state, up 32.1% to 568,000 units, followed by Uttar Pradesh state, up 27.2% to 437,000 units, and Gujarat state, up 25.0% to 399,000 units. The sales expansion of Tata Motos was especially noticeable in these top three states.
