New Zealand’s Automobile Market in 2025

New Zealand’s new vehicle sales reached approximately 138,000 units in 2025, a 7.3% increase year-on-year. However, sales in 2024 had plummeted by roughly 14% due to the termination of the “Clean Car Discount” (a BEV / PHEV purchase subsidy) at the end of 2023; therefore, the growth in 2025 includes a rebound effect from that slump. Compared to 2023, 2025 sales were down 7.3%, and they remained 15.5% lower than the recent 2022 peak, indicating that sales levels remain low. This is attributed to weakened consumer purchasing power caused by post-pandemic inflation and a prolonged period of high interest rates aimed at curbing it.
