Recent Developments in Japan’s Semiconductor Industry

Semiconductor manufacturers are stepping up investment in Japan. This is due to factors such as the expected increase in demand and the fact that the government is supporting the domestic production of semiconductors with subsidies to ensure economic security. As of December 2022, Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, a joint venture of Taiwanese semiconductor maker TSMC and two Japanese companies Sony and Denso, American-Japanese computer memory manufacturer Kioxia, and US semiconductor maker Micron Technology have been approved for subsidies.

The in-vehicle semiconductor market is expected to grow 2.2 times by 2030 compared to 2019. Demand for all types of semiconductors such as memory, sensors, and power semiconductors is forecast to increase rapidly for next-generation mobility such as BEVs and autonomous driving.
