India / Indonesia / Thailand: Exports Results of Motorcycles in 2022

In addition to China, Asia’s three major motorcycle exporters are India, Indonesia and Thailand, having an annual export scale of 4 million units, 700,000-800,000 units and around 400,000 units respectively. All three countries increased exports in 2021 against the backdrop of strong global demand for motorcycles. However, from the second half of 2022, motorcycle exports from India and Indonesia significantly declined.

Demand for motorcycles in Africa, which accounts for about 50% of India's motorcycle exports, plummeted from the second half of 2022. As a result, India’s total exports decreased 8.9% to 4,053,254 units.

Indonesia witnessed a significant drop as well due to efforts in the Philippines, Indonesia’s largest export destination of motorcycles, to boost local motorcycle manufacturing. Yamaha set up a new plant in the Philippines in 2021 and Honda transferred production of scooters that had been exported from Indonesia to the Philippines in 2022.
