Overview of Asia’s Automobile Sales, Production and Exports in H1 2025

This report has compiled preliminary figures for automobile sales, production, and exports from January to June 2025 on Asian markets (total of 12 countries in South Asia, ASEAN and East Asia, excluding China and Japan). In the first half of 2025, automobile sales in Asia increased by 1.3% compared to the same period last year to 5,375,932 units. Of the 12 countries, only four saw a decrease, but the decline was large in Indonesia and Taiwan. On the other hand, seven countries saw an increase, but the expansion was small in two major markets, India and South Korea, so the overall rise was a mere 1.3% (sales data was not available for Myanmar). Looking at the GDP growth rates of Asian countries for the first quarter of 2025, based on data available as of August 2025, South Korea experienced negative growth. On the other hand, the GDP growth of India and Taiwan was still expanding compared to the fourth quarter of 2024 and did not slow down significantly in the five leading ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam), so overall sluggish sales were not because the economic situation was deteriorating, but rather other factors seemed to be at play.
