Battery Powerhouse Hungary: Inside China’s Massive Electromobility Ecosystem in Europe

Hungary has emerged as a premier European electromobility hub, hosting an integrated supply chain that spans from raw chemical processing to battery assembly and charging infrastructure, led by Chinese industrial titans. This report introduces 10 key Chinese battery cell makers and component suppliers shaping the nation’s energy landscape; however, it excludes automotive giant BYD. Although BYD is constructing its first European passenger BEV manufacturing plant in Hungary and already manufactures e-buses in the country, it currently imports its finished battery cells directly from China and merely assembles battery packs locally. The 10 companies featured in this analysis strategically selected Hungary due to the country’s “Eastern Opening” policy, which offers lucrative state aid subsidies, simplified administrative pathways, and a highly welcoming political environment. Furthermore, localizing production inside Hungary allows Chinese manufacturers to seamlessly circumvent rising EU tariffs on imported battery components and electric vehicles. This strategic geographical positioning also places them directly adjacent to major German automakers operating in Hungary, such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi, ensuring friction-free, just-in-time supply chains for Europe’s shift to electric vehicles.
