Indonesia’s Automobile Sales Results in YTD June 2021

Indonesia’s automobile sales in the first six months of 2021 increased 50.8% year-on-year to 393,000 units. In the previous year, which is the subject of comparison, large-scale social restrictions were implemented from March due to the spread of the new coronavirus. In addition, the reduction of luxury tax, which covers automobiles among other products, was implemented in March 2021. These factors significantly increased sales in the first half of 2021 compared to the same period of 2020. However, in addition to the introduction of stricter automobile loans, the number of people infected with the new coronavirus has rapidly increased in June and July 2021, resulting in large-scale social restrictions which make market recovery in the second half of 2021 uncertain.

Looking at sales by vehicle type, passenger vehicles increased 46.2% to 291,000 units, and commercial vehicles rose 65.5% to 102,000 units. Non-sedans (4x2) which form the largest segment went up 51.5% to 213,000 units, and pickup trucks increased 79.6% to 67,000 units, showing remarkable growth.
