Taiwan’s 2025 Automobile Sales by Segment

In 2025, the Taiwanese automotive market decreased by 9.5% year-on-year to 414,000 units. This decline was largely driven by a consumer holdout on purchases from April to August of that year. The slowdown occurred as the Taiwanese government considered lowering the commodity tax (excise tax) as a bargaining chip against additional tariffs announced by the United States in April 2025 (the bill was passed and took effect in September of the same year). Major segments declined across the board: mid-to-large SUVs fell by 2.5% to 119,000 units, premium vehicles dropped by 10.7% to 103,000 units, small SUVs decreased by 21.3% to 48,000 units, and C-segment cars (sedans / hatchbacks) plummeted by 22.7% to 28,000 units.
