Toyota Motor’s 2022 Sales Results of Automobiles in the United States

Toyota Motor's vehicle sales in the United States in 2022 dropped 9.6% year-on-year to 2,108,458 units. In 2012, Toyota's U.S. sales recovered to over 2 million units for the first time in four years. After that, from 2014 until 2019, before the COVID-19 crisis, sales remained at a level of around 2.4 million units annually. Sales fell to 2.1 million units in 2020, rose back to over 2.3 million units in 2021, but declined again in 2022 when the impact of the supply disruption became more serious.

Toyota brand sales fell 8.8% year-on-year to 1,849,754 units in 2022, falling below the 2 million level for the first time in two years. Sales of top-selling models, the RAV4 and Camry, which sell more than 300,000 units a year, decreased by a single digit, going down 1.9% and 5.9% respectively; however, the Highlander, 4Runner and Corolla among others, which sell more than 100,000 units a year, fell double digits.

The average sale price per unit remained around 40,000 USD in 2022 as inventories became tight due to supply disruptions. Meanwhile, the incentive amount per vehicle has declined significantly in 2022, dropping below 600 USD in December. In addition, the operating loss of the North American operations in the July-September period of 2022 fell into the red due to rising material prices and labor costs.
