Suzuki Motor Expands Production Capacity and Sales Network in India to Remain on Top

Suzuki Motor’s vehicle sales in India fell below the previous year’s level for the first time in eight years in 2019. Sales are expected to decline in 2020 as well.

Suzuki’s vehicle sales in India decreased 13.7% year-on-year to 1.51 million units in 2019. Although its market share decreased 0.2pp to 39.6%, Suzuki remained India’s top automaker. India’s declining economic growth and rising vehicle prices due to the introduction BS6 emission standards in April 2020 are the reasons behind shrinking vehicle sales. Despite slashing the price of some models, and launching the XL6 MPV in August 2019 and the S-Presso small SUV in the following month, year-round sales dropped double digits. In 2020, sales are expected to remain sluggish due to stagnant demand and supply as a result of the lockdown across India caused by the new coronavirus.
