Japan’s Sales Results of Imported Vehicle Brands in the First Half of 2023

In the first half of 2023, sales of imported brand vehicles in Japan increased by 5.4% year-on-year to 122,667 units, going up for the first time in two years. In addition to the C-segment vehicles of BMW and Audi, the expansion of BEVs was conspicuous. However, the percentage of imported brands in the total market decreased by 0.6 points to 5.0%, and the pace of increase was slow compared to the overall market. The decline in market share is believed to be the result of Toyota recovering production after experiencing a supply disruption triggered by the shortage of semiconductors in the same period of the previous year, and import brand companies raising prices due to the weaker yen. Although there were some fluctuations in the top ranks, there was no change in the composition of German brands monopolizing the top five positions.
