Sales Performance of Former FCA Brands in the Japanese Market in 2023

This report summarizes the recent trends of Stellantis’ brands (Fiat / Abarth / Alfa Romeo / Jeep) that formerly belonged to FCA in the Japanese market. Sales volume has been around 20,000 units per year, of which the Jeep Wrangler and the Fiat 500 made up about half. In 2023, total sales decreased by 2.1% from the previous year to 19,497 units. The four brands’ share of foreign brand cars decreased by 0.3 percentage points to 7.9%, due to a decline in sales of the Fiat 500 as it’s reaching the end of its model year.

Fiat announced that it would end production of the 500 and 500C models in May 2024. The 500 was introduced to the Japanese market in 2008 and has sold a total of approximately 130,000 units. Production of the TwinAir version, equipped with a two-cylinder engine, ended in October 2023. Only the BEV version 500e will now be available of the 500 series.Production of Abarth models based on the Fiat 500 and 500C is also likely to end soon.

In contrast, Jeep released the facelifted Wrangler in May 2024. The Japanese market is Wrangler’s fourth largest market in the world after the United States, Canada, and China. Since its original release in November 2018, its price has roughly doubled because of the weak yen, semiconductor shortages, and rising prices. Regarding the facelifted version, it underwent some improvements, the entry grade was reset, and the price was lowered while expanding equipment.
