Asia’s Motorcycle Sales Results in YTD June 2021

In the first half of 2021, motorcycle sales in nine Asian countries (India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam) increased 33.6% from the same period of the previous year to 13.7 million units. The sharp increase in sales is due to a 40% drop in the same period of the previous year triggered by the first wave of the new coronavirus infection. The sales results in the first half of 2021 are less than 80% compared to the first half of 2019 before the outbreak of the pandemic.

Looking at motorcycle sales by region and country, India, the world’s largest motorcycle market, increased 40.9% to 6.76 million units. The top two manufacturers increased double digits. Hero MotoCorp rose 33.6% to 2.44 million units and Honda went up 43.9% to 1.71 million units. However, from the end of April to May 2021, the pace of recovery slowed down due to a sharp drop in production and sales triggered by the second wave of the new coronavirus. The sales results in the first half of 2021 are about 70% compared to the first half of 2019.
