Taiwan’s Automobile Sales Results in YTD June 2021

Taiwan’s automobile sales in the first six months of 2021 increased 5.7% year-on-year to 222,000 units. Initially, Taiwan has succeeded in suppressing the new coronavirus infection, but the number of infected people exceeded 700 in one week in mid-May 2021, resulting in a 30% decrease in automobile sales in June. However, since the end of June, the daily number of infected people has been kept below 100.

Looking at sales by vehicle type, passenger cars such as sedans and hatchbacks continued to decline, going down 12.6% to 65,000 units. On the other hand, recreational vehicles such as SUVs and MPVs increased 18.3% to 127,000 units, and commercial vehicles went up 5.9% to 30,000 units. The two largest segments in the passenger car category declined double digits. Compact cars dropped 18.4% to 16,000 units and small cars went down 25.2% to 25,000 units. In contrast, SUVs in the recreational vehicle category increased 24.5% to 108,000 units driven by the new-vehicle effect of the Toyota Corolla Cross.
